Yesterday, February 29th, Twenty One Pilots announced their long-awaited sixth album, Clancy, as well as the release of a single and corresponding music video titled “Overcompensate.”

A week before the announcement of the new album, February 22nd, Twenty One Pilots posted a video on their instagram explaining the story behind the videos that accompanied their 2018 album Trench, both to instill excitement in long-term fans and to give context to new ones.

Similar to the release of Trench after a year-long hiatus in 2017, the announcement of Clancy has come with plenty of easter eggs and clues for fans to get excited. The album photo of Clancy is a combination of the red from Blurryface and the yellow from Trench, solidifying Clancy as a continuation of an almost decade-long story. In addition, the rest of their album covers now feature red tape, similar to the yellow tape that accompanied Trench

Their new single and first track on the album, titled “Overcompensate,” features the message “Welcome back to Trench,” bringing back the style of the 2018 album. The combination of poetic lyrics aligning with a larger and mysterious narrative keeps fans coming back for more. The single also includes the familiar phrase, “Sahlo Folina,” the meaning of which is still debated by fans. At the very end of the music video, a small scene of the band members getting off of a boat is likely just a teaser of the return to Trench and what’s to come.

Clancy will be released on the 9th anniversary of Blurryface, May 17th, as an end to the long journey that Blurryface began. No tour or upcoming singles have been announced as of yet, but is likely in the months leading up to the album’s release in a couple months.
