UGA's Music Business Student Spotlights Vol. 1

Writer: Natalie KramerNatalie Kramer

Music Business Certificate Program

The University of Georgia’s Music Business Program is perfect for those who have a passion for music and want to turn that passion into a sustainable, lifelong career. The program combines an experience-based education in the music industry with a foundation in business to ensure the success of its students. From countless networking opportunities to connecting students with internships, the Music Business Program is one-of-a-kind in the way it prepares its graduates for the dynamic, ever-innovating music industry.

Before graduating from the certificate program, students must complete a project to have a feasible representation of the knowledge they gained through the program. From people creating their own music to marketing agencies, projects representing all facets of the music industry come together to create their own universe. The Queue, itself, is made up of 5 MBUS students and is our final project. The next two upcoming posts will feature fellow MBUS students and the amazing music that they have created and released!

Serendipity: Surabhi Joshi

Serendipity is a pop artist from Athens who is releasing her first song for her project. She has always enjoyed songwriting in her free time, and is excited to endeavor into finding herself as an artist and releasing her own music. When asked to describe herself as an artist, she said she doesn’t really know yet, but “know[s] that [she] loves to write about life and [her] experiences and hope[s] that [her] words connect with others.” As an artist, Serendipity strives to make sense of life through her songwriting and connect on a personal level with her listeners through her relatable lyrics.

When asked about what inspired her recently released single, “Teenage Queen,” she replied that it explores the all-too-familiar feeling of envy that is all too common in the younger stages of life. The song “stems from a place of feeling like the people around [her] had the things [she] wanted.” The name “Teenage Queen” comes from the conflicting feeling of jealousy towards the girl who seems to have it all while also hoping that someday, you’ll be able to find a life that is similar to hers.

CMNTMusic: Brentsen Wyatt

CMNTMusic is an established artist duo from Athens, GA, with a discography that surpasses genre and has innovated from the very start. They made their debut in 2022, with a 3-song CP that explored a multitude of genres in a seamless fashion, identifying the release as “genre-less.” In addition, they own their own record label. For their project, the band is releasing their long-anticipated full studio album, titled, “this is not a test,” as well as a music video that will be released alongside.

When asked to describe themselves as an artist, CMNTMusic stressed that they cannot be defined by genre, but are rather influenced by many genres, including (but not limited to): “pop, hip-hop, rock, country, jazz, blues, classical, and just about everything!” They are so excited to share their upcoming music and believe that their music will be appealing to every music listener because of their genre-less style.

When asked what inspired their upcoming album, CMNTMusic said that “this album is the product of more than 15 years of music education and 5 years of songwriting.” The album is unique because the songs are not ordered chronologically by which they were produced, but rather put together in a way that tells its own story. When asked about the name, “This is Not a Test,” the artist said that it was reminiscent of what they would say when they weren’t confident about the demos that they were showing to others, always using the excuse that they were only testing something out. This collection of music for the long-awaited album is different because the artist is “confident in what they are putting out into the world” and that is definitely something to be proud of.

Madisun: Sune Hamilton and Maddie Lu

Madisun is a two-member pop-indie group from Athens, who are both current MBUS students and decided to debut their first single for their project. When asked to describe themselves as an artist, they said that they aimed to share good vibes and uplifting lyrics with their music, and are not afraid to venture into experimental and original sound. They “believe that art should be fun first.”

When asked what inspired their song, Madisun replied that they were so inspired that the lyrics basically wrote themselves. With the signs of spring just around the corner, the group was reminded of “the idea of fresh love, so [they] focused on the energy and youthful feeling that’s associated with a crush,” and allowed the lyrics organically from that emotion.

Their self-written and self-produced song is titled, “like this,” and is available on Spotify NOW:
